Drivers Education gives students opportunity to own their freedom
Life is always a bumpy road, but eventually you learn how to drive on it. Northern High School Driver’s education (ed) program started on Monday, September 24th. Drivers ED helps one learn about the rules of the road and how to stick to safe driving.
“We take notes and watch videos about learning how to drive, safety percussion’s, and the rules of the road.” sophomore Lakayla Liles said. “My favorite part about drivers ed is the driving part, because driving makes it seem like [you are] maturing.”
While some students gain a lot of knowledge about driving and the rules of the road others do not find the information taught to be enough to remember after taking the program.
“After drivers ed I [did not] remember anything, they [do not] really make the notes precise enough for it to stick with you,” sophomore Tiffany Combs said.
Even though there are some students who do not particularly like the class, there are other students who enjoy it a lot.
“I feel like drivers ed is good for teaching the rules of the road, but I feel like you should be able to test out of it,” chorus teacher Rachel Spencer said.

Many students think that they would be fine without drivers ed and to learn how to drive on their own or with a trusted adult, but drivers ed can come in handy when learning the rules of the road.
“If you learn the rules of the road on your own then all you need to do is practice driving, so drivers Ed should only be a thing if you have not studied or learned the rules of the road,” Spencer said.
Drivers ed can be useful and helpful for those who have not studied or learned the rules of the road, many students are fine without the class as well as some who are in it enjoy it very much.
“I was already familiar with the rules of the road from watching my parents drive most of my life, but drivers ED helped me understand them even more” sophomore Melissa Torres said.
The program has helped those to understand the rules of the road more clearly, but even without it, it is pretty easy to adapt to the rules of driving just by watching your parents or any driver in action.
