A Lovely Holiday That Could Be Better

Is Valentine's Day an overrated and pointless holiday? Valentine’s Day was named after Saint Valentine who defied a Roman Emperor who outlawed marriage for young men. He did this because he believed single men would make better warriors. Saint Valentine believed it was unjust and continued to secretly marry young couples. To continue his memory they created Valentine's Day named after him.

Some people view Valentine’s Day as “the Day of Romance” while others are reminded of their loneliness. On February 14th many people in relationships stress and scurry to get gifts for their Valentine’s date. The most common Valentine gifts include chocolates, flowers and stuffed animals. Some people go all out and plan elaborate dates to impress their companion.

To figure if Valentine’s Day is worth celebrating common gifts have been individually reviewed. Stuffed animals for Valentine’s range from $15 - $80 depending on size. After receiving a stuffed animal most people do not use it on a daily basis, therefore it is not worth the price. The next common gift to be reviewed is a bouquet of flowers, the price ranges from $10-$50 depending on the type of flower and size of bouquet. Although flowers are thoughtful and a nice decoration they only last a couple of days and die shortly after being gifted. The last classic Valentine’s gift is chocolates, these are sold for $5-$30. Chocolates are a decent gift because they taste good, but do not last very long and are not memorable.

Overall store-bought Valentine’s gifts are overrated, not the holiday itself. The stress of buying gifts that are not useful or memorable long term is not worth it. To make Valentine’s day a special “Day of Love” instead of buying cheesy, overrated gifts try making something thoughtful for a Valentine. A jar of “all the reasons I love you” is long lasting , valued and easy to make. Another gift that can be valued and used almost daily is an initial necklace, this is thoughtful and more personal than any regular necklace. In conclusion, Valentine’s day is worth celebrating as long as it is done right. Taking the time to think out a heartfelt gift will create a longer lasting impact rather than a quickly bought store gift.
