Juice WRLD and Future: iconic or repetitive?

2018 has been just as interesting of a year as any for the world of hip-hop music. A year full of legendary albums, celebrity drama, and iconic collaborations- one of those iconic collaborations being Juice WRLD and Future’s album, WRLD On Drugs.

Juice WRLD initially became popular in the rap scene this past May with the release of his first studio album, Goodbye & Good Riddance, which includes his first hit song, “Lucid Dreams.” Since he originally released the single on the music platform known as SoundCloud, the Chicago rapper gained tremendous popularity.

As for Future, the fellow rapper has been in the game for a couple more years, since he really gained popularity in 2011 after the release of his song “Tony Montana,” featuring Drake. Since then, Future has worked with various artists on collaboration albums, including Young Thug and Drake.

Overall, the sound of the album is really repetitive. It contains a lot of Future ad libs over a hype beat and basic Juice WRLD verses about girls and substance abuse. Although, a few songs stuck out such as, “No Issue,” which is still a hype song, but more unique than the others with its beat and catchy lines. “Hard Work Pays Off” is another song that differs from the rest with its slower beat and more positive tone about how both of the rapper’s hard work has been rewarding.

Not only is the album repetitive, but it also carries a negative message that is prevalent throughout the entire album. Of course certain rappers are known for their vulgar language, drug promotion, and violent lifestyle, but this album mentions those things so much; It is to the point where it is obnoxious. In songs like “Oxy,” and “WRLD On Drugs,” drugs are the focal point the entire time. The two artists could have just as easily used their platform to turn this album around to have a more positive message and think about how their music affects the youth’s attitude toward drug use.

Despite the similarities between the songs, which all rap albums seem to have these days, and the constant mention of drugs, the album contains some decent songs. It is just important to remember that is it just music, and you do not have to agree with an artist’s lifestyle to think a song, or album is good or not.
