Why the 90's are overrated
We have all seen that one person who will post a picture of an old activity or television show saying “only 90s babies will remember”, whereas most people born more recent than them can also recall. Not just that, but when you are talking to anyone who grew up in that decade, they will tell you how much better television was, or how this sports league was better 20 years ago. They will do this while also putting down this generation’s respective activities in a very condescending tone.
One of the first problems you come across is people born in the 90s try to claim what they do enjoy by saying only they experience it and disregard those who were also fond of the same thing. Said people will try to talk about childhood shows as if only the select few born in the 90s experienced it. Almost everybody in the world has watched SpongeBob, that is not an accomplishment or an exclusive activity. Everyone has experienced those elementary school activities, it does not make you cool to say you did it.
It is also annoying to hear them saying that times were better when they were kids. The statement is stupid because almost everyone thinks that. When you are a kid there are no responsibilities or much to worry about. As you get older you are required to do more and take on more responsibility, that in of itself would cause you more stress. Very few has changed outside of technology, everything else remains the same from politics to our schools. But the creation of social media has created this false narrative.
The main problem with these statements regarding the recent decade is that most of these sentiments are that they are opinions and nothing more. The opinion that you have does not always align with everyone else’s opinions. There is nothing wrong with liking various shows or sports of the 90s, but it that does not mean being dismissive to those who do not like it. Nor does mean being condescending to people who like what you do not. Being able to give your opinion without coming off as a hater is not impossible, just find a way to be understanding to those who do not like it. But instead, try to show why you like what you like from the 90s in a non-obnoxious and discussion-engaging way.
