Women's soccer player Hammond has made the most of her last four years

Callie Hammond is a senior at Northern High School who has played varsity soccer all her four years here; She plays MidField and is Nationally ranked (395). This season alone she has been selected as Northern Girls Soccer Player of the Game a total of seven times.

In her career at Northern, Hammond has played 55 games, with 188 points, (these points are accumulated by scoring goals, getting assists, etc) 76 goals total, and 36 assists, and averages of 1.4 goals per gameand 0.7 assists per game.

Hammond is one of the Women’s Varsity Soccer captains and she shows compassion and leadership within the Northern soccer program. She has developed herself as a player and a person throughout the four years. Her character has carried over onto younger players.

“Callie has helped me grow as a person and a player,” junior Makayla Powell said. “[Callie] always pushes me to play my best and she also praises me when I play a [great] game, which leads me to want to play the same the next game.”

Her leadership and proven ability to lead the team has had a impact on the head coach Josh MacIver. Over the seven years that MacIver has known Hammond, he has seen her overall growth.

“As a player I think Callie’s greatest asset is her speed. As she entered high school [I helped her to learn] to take her speed and build other skills around it,” MacIver said.

Hammond has committed to Catawba University to play soccer starting in the fall of 2019. Catawba’s Women's Soccer team was 13-6 overall in 2018, making them 6-4 in their conference. Hammond has been passing her strategies so becoming so successful in the game onto her younger teammates.

“[Callie] definitely made me more aggressive as a player and watching her plays makes me wants to go harder [every game],” sophomore Maiya Weaver said.

Callie has had many memories made here at Northern, but she has one she remembers the most and cherishes.

“[My favorite memory was] when we beat East Chapel Hill last season 5-0,” Hammond said.

The regular season has 13 games left, and then playoffs start. Northern’s Women’s Soccer’s record as of now is 5-2-1 and they are 1-2 in conference. All players are looking towards Callie and other captains to lead the team into the playoffs.

“[She has gotten] a lot better. She works very hard and she is so encouraging and has scored many goals [this season alone],” junior Autumn Connors said.

Though Hammond will soon be ending her high school career, she has much ahead of her. Only great things can be expected from such a great player, person, and student. She has always been a motivator for other teammates and will continue to show leadership as she begins her career at Catawba.
