Annual Hall of Fame tournament is another success
Every year in April, the Northern high school booster club puts on a golf tournament. The Hall of Fame golf tournament raises money for all Northern sports. The tournament has raised over twenty thousand dollars every year, in the past.
On the Friday night before the tournament (April 26th) hundreds of parents and their kids come out to enjoy the bar night and the food trucks at Umstead Pines in Willowhaven, where the tournament is held. There is also a silent auction going on in the dining room area.
The silent auction includes over ten thousand dollars in items such as season tickets for the Carolina Hurricanes, or even a vacation to an upscale golf course, Mid Pines. Mid Pines holds the women's U.S. Open and many other ameatuer championships.
On the day of the tournament, players arrive at around 8:00 a.m. to warm up and get ready. Golf coach, Kevin Wicker, and Northern athletic director, Boo Rigsbee, make announcements around 9:00 am.
The entry fee for the tournament is seventy-five dollars and it includes a Chick-fil-A breakfast, as well as non-alcoholic drinks, such as soda.
Each player’s team consists of four people. In a best ball format, each player hits a tee shot and then the group picks the best ball to hit from and this continues until the ball is in the cup.
After the tournament is over, Wicker brings everyone into the banquet room and feeds all of the players pizza. While players are eating, a raffle is called out and the players are able to win prizes like golf balls, golf clubs, range finders, hats, clothes, and much more!
The winning team this year won a two day trip to play two rounds of golf at Mid Pines and Pine Needles golf club.
Next year's tournament will be held at the same location, Umstead Pines, and the date is to be determined. Information about the tournament will be posted on Kevin Wickers twitter (@Kevwicker) in the months leading up to the tournament.
The tournament ran very smoothly without any problems and it is a fun opportunity to hang out with friends and play golf.
