Northern makes way toward golf regionals
The Northern Knight’s golf team has had a very successful season. Finishing third in the overall conference, and second in the conference tournament, the Knights look to continue the hot streak at regionals.
Brycen Swain led the team with 311 total strokes this season, followed by Zack Currin and Jake Howard with 326. These scores are very impressive and these three look to lead the team in breaking 310 as a team at regionals.
“All of the laughs and jokes have made this an enjoyable season,” senior Kedan Whitt said. “This will be the most missed season of my high school career.”
This season has been a roller coaster ride for the team, getting off to a cold start this season and picking it up the second half of the season. The team has sat in third place all year, but throughout the season.
“Since we got ourselves together, third place was on lockdown,” senior Ben Irvin said. “Finishing second would have been nice, but third [is not] something to complain about with the amount of experience we have.”

The team really flipped a switch from last year, losing five seniors. Losing a lot of seniors can take a toll on your team, unless you have underclassman who want to step up and make a name for themselves.
“A lot of people stepped up this year, and because of them, we are in the place we should be,” head coach Kevin Wicker said.
Leadership on the golf team is like leadership on any team. You have to make sure your teammates heads are not hanging low and that they always have a positive attitude. However, with it being an individual sport, more people look at you at once. Displaying leadership on the course includes behaving maturely, and having a positive attitude throughout your round.
“Being a captain this year has helped my golf game out a lot,” senior Zack Currin said. “It has helped me keep my cool and not lose it when I hit a bad shot, and when you show bad body language you start playing bad.”
Golf is a game where you have to practice to perform well. When you practice you get the repetition and the opportunity to practice shots you might have in a real match.
“Our practices have been a lot stronger this season and very focused,” junior Nate Petrucelli said. “Since they have been better, the players have been performing better.”
The season is coming to an end, and the golf team looks to finish on a high note at Keith Hills golf course for regionals on Monday, May 6th. The team did well at regionals, but did not get the scores to advance to states. The Knight’s look to have a strong off season and prepare for an amazing season next spring.
