A New Season Calls For Hard Work
The school year has just begun and along with it, comes fall sports. The Northern football team started workouts directly following the previous season to get ready for the new year. The team is currently 3-1 in the regular season and are only getting better from there.
“We have a lot of hours of practice on and off the field so that we can perform the best we can on Friday nights,” junior Anthony Freeman said. “This season [has been going good] because of all the players buying into the culture [that] we have set around the team.”
Every team always wants to see improvement from one season to the next, and for the NHS football team things are getting off to a good start.
“What the football team has done to help us have a better season is by having workouts start two weeks [after the previous season has ended] and by having many of us in the same classes to create a brotherhood,” junior Ellison Graham said. “We are the biggest organization on campus therefore it brings a lot of people together and teaches us all to [work with new people].”
Training for the season comes in many different forms. This depends on who the athlete is and how they like to personally prepare themselves.
“We [have] trained all summer and played a lot of 7 v 7 and we also condition everyday whether [it is] a good practice or not because you can never go wrong with getting into shape,” junior Jaelin Evans said. “We stand out with our intensity [as] we are always ready to play no matter what as it gives us a chance to get looks from college coaches and to get better and better.”
Being a part of a team means working together to help everyone reach their full potential and become the best they can be.
“[I have] been working on being a good leader for the younger guys and trying to bring everyone together,” senior Jaden Taylor said. “The football team seems to bring everyone out of their shell and allows them to be free.”
All members of the team have been putting their all into this season to show the dedication required to win this season.
“We have been working since last season ended with weight room workouts, winter skill development, spring practice, summer workouts, training camps, and more to prepare for this season,” head coach John Hammett said. “We [have] a tough schedule but hopefully we will be ready for the Big 8 Conference.”
As the season is just getting started, this team has been getting ready to show their hard work pay off. The improvement is showing through all of the players as a whole and as individuals. Come out and support the team at their next game on Friday, October 11th at the Durham County Stadium to show your school pride!
