New Head Coach Brings Tennis Team Inspiring Wins

Fall sports are already underway at Northern and the women's tennis team has gotten off to a great start with a 3-5-0 record. The team had an outstanding victory beating Vance county with a 9-0 score.

This season, Christina Vannasing has taken over as the captain, meaning she is the leader of the team.

“Due to the fact that we have a new coach, being captain has been really enjoyable and has really placed me in a leadership position,” senior captain Christina Vannasing said. “It helps with pressure for Coach Mary Mills in her first year as coach.”

A team can create bonds and friendships between teammates and create bonds and become closer with each other. Teammates should be very supportive and positive towards each other.

“The best part is the team is everyone is really supportive and happy and it feels like a family,” junior Katie Combs said.

Goals are a big part of being a team player and setting goals to achieve throughout the season. Goals can help a team get better individually and collectively.

“My main goal is to improve my skills as an individual, have fun and enjoy the rest of the season with my team, and make the best of it,” junior Gisselle Castro said. “[In her first year] coach Mills has gained trust and loved the time so far.”

Players respect their coach and need to gain confidence in teammates before the season starts.

“The girls have said I bring lots of positivity and excitement to cheer for them to help joy them up for matches,” coach Mary Margaret Mills said. “Being on the team is a big responsibility with balancing sports and grades with all the homework as a highschooler.”

Student athletes have tons to deal with while balancing school and keep practicing their sport.

“Balancing tennis and school is a big part of being a student athlete,” senior Ellie Gitter said. Regardless of the work the ladies need to complete off the court, they are focused and ready for challenges.

The knights have some matches to finish of the season and are working on improving the record by the end of the season.
