Northern Hosts Annual Homecoming Week
Homecoming week is typically a widely celebrated and cherished tradition throughout the country, specifically in Southern high schools, and Northern is no exception. Homecoming week is consistently one of the most eventful weeks of the school year at Northern, and is one that students always look forward to.
This year, homecoming week at Northern was October 21-26. The week consisted of spirit days; Marvel Monday, Twin Tuesday, Wacky Tacky Wednesday, Throwback Thursday, and Class Color Friday. On Friday afternoon, there was the annual pep rally before the homecoming football game which followed that night, in which Northern beat Vance County High School 13-6. During halftime, Cameron Traylor and Jala Bryant were announced as the 2019 homecoming king and queen. On Saturday night, the homecoming dance, which is typically the students’ favorite part of homecoming week, was hosted back at Northern.
Overall, homecoming week was fun and memorable. However, it could have been better; One aspect that could have been better was the choice of spirit days. Many students said that they wished that student council had chosen more unique days, as opposed to the same ones that are used year after year, such as wacky-tacky day. Spirit week would have also been more successful if more students had participated, so in the future, Northern should try to get more students involved.
The pep rally could have also been improved. Though it was entertaining, it was very hard to hear what anyone who was talking on the microphone was saying. Also, Northern students have expressed how they wish that there could be other pep rally activities besides the typical relay races that are held every year, because it is not very fun to watch other students participate in a game that you are not a part of. The cheerleaders performance at the pep rally was fun to watch, as was the introduction of the senior homecoming court members. However, younger court members wished that they had been recognized.
The homecoming dance was fun if you actually danced, instead of just sitting down and watching. The music, though, was not what most students wanted to hear. Next year, administrators should allow students to send in song requests before the night of the dance, so that more students will dance and enjoy themselves. The dance could have also
been better if the theme of “A Night in Hollywood” was better incorporated. There was a red carpet, but there were not any other Hollywood aspects. It could have been better if they had
more decorations or an area for photos to be taken in.
