Luke Combs Defines the Sophomore Slump

Luke Combs is a country music artist who quickly took over the country music industry. Luke Combs first album “This One’s for You” which was released in 2017 and quickly rose to number one on the country music list; It also claimed the number one spot for a record 50 weeks. The next album Combs released was “This One’s for You Too” which consisted of five new songs, paired with songs from his last album.

After Luke Combs’ booming success, critics and listeners wondered if there was going to be a “sophomore slump”. A “sophomore slump” is when an artist creates great music and gets popular quickly and then their next album is often rushed and low production quality. Combs defeated the stereotype of the slump,as he created most likely his best album.

Released on November 7 “ What You See is What You Get” consists of 17 songs and lasts just under an hour. This album by far is the most star-studded with appearances from country music legends of Brooks and Dunn and Eric Church. Brooks and Dunn appeared on the track “1 2 Many” and increased the value of the song tremendously. Luke also appeared on their reboot in “ Brand New Man”. The features of the two artists also helped to create even more listeners form their fan bases.

These are my top three songs from the album.

1. “Does To Me” Feat. Eric Church

I put this song at number one because of two reasons. The first reason is that the vocals in the song might be the best on the album. The harmony is upbeat and gives you a good feeling when you are listening to it. The second reason is that the song is very relatable. The main idea is that things that might not seem like a big accomplishment to everyone else but to you it is the biggest event in the world.

2.“Beer Never Broke My Heart”

The overall message in this song is comical and enjoyable. To me, the song is saying that if everything else hurts you or breaks your heart, beer will always be there. The chorus in this song is amazing and it is a classic Luke Combs song. This song came out on the prequel, which contained the first four songs of the album and it created a sneak peak into the album.

3. “Better Together”

This song is different from all other songs on the album. The piano and the slow tempo of the song makes it feel like Combs is singing from the heart and expressing what he enjoys in life. The change of pace from a guitar and drums to a subtle piano and quality lyrics is quite refreshing.

Overall the album covered everything a country album needed to have, from having a slow sad heartbreak song to having a beer with your friends.
