On December 4th from 9:00am to 2:30pm, Northern High School hosted a community blood drive for the American Red Cross. The blood drive is a great way for Northern students to give back and help save lives. Blood that is donated can be used for blood transfusions or during surgeries. The opportunity to donate blood is a way for students and faculty to help those in need.

“I am happy with my decision to donate because I know it will be used somehow,” junior Skyler Williford said.

There is always a need for different types of blood. Blood banks need a large supply of each type. Type O is the universal donor, and there are also types A, B, and AB.

“My blood is the universal donor so I knew my blood could help others,” senior Maddy Murell said.

Donating blood benefits our community and the donor. It benefits our community because the blood that is donated is given to local hospitals. Blood drives benefit the donors because they know that they can save up to three lives with only one pint of blood.

“We had over 60 volunteers donate blood at Northern,” Sports Medicine teacher Gerome Simpson said. “This just shows that Northern is a very community service oriented school.”

Northern’s sports medicine class hosts the annual blood drive. The students volunteer and assist the red cross workers. Helping with the blood drives allows the sports medicine students to use their knowledge in a real life situation. The students are also offered extra credit if they donate.

“In my sports medicine class I could get a 100 test grade and the ability to save a live,” junior Abigail Walker said.

Workers and nurses from the American Red Cross came to northern to help gather blood for local blood banks and hospitals. These nurses are there to help calm your nerves and take blood without causing extra pain.

“I was nervous at first but the nurses took good care of me,” senior Cody Byrd said. ¨They did a good job calming my nerves.¨

The blood drive is a great way for Northern High School to help our community. The blood drive gave students and faculty a chance to save other local lives.
