Why is TikTok so addictive in today's society? The answer is simply because the app capitalizes on short attention spans and bringing various new content to its viewers. Also, the app does a lot of promotion and advertising to different groups of people to pull in more viewers.
TikTok is an app that launched in late 2016, for both iOS and Android as a video-sharing social media app. On the app you can make different kinds of videos like dancing and lip-syncing in order to share with others and get likes for making good content.
A TikTok can last no longer than one minute and the average time for one is around 15 to 30 seconds. So, the fact that these videos last for such a short period of time means that a person can get through a multitude of videos of various kinds of content in no time. This is similar to what the app Vine did, where they had six second long videos of all different types.
Since TikTok has different kinds of videos for its viewers. There are things like comedy, politics, dancing, singing, etc. all on there for people to see. This widens the audience that TikTok is able to reach since it has videos for all sorts of interests but in order to keep you on the app, TikTok will recommend videos to you similar to the ones you have liked, while slowly trying to introduce new types of content to try and broaden the kinds of TikToks you see.
The app also has a lot of promotion on many different platforms. The main one however, is Youtube. A lot of TikTok ads are seen on Youtube and the reason for this is so that the creators can promote the app in order to reach mass numbers of people. These new audiences then come to the app and get trapped in the system set up by TikTok that keeps people watching by offering videos of all sorts for short periods of time.
TikTok is a very addictive app and it has continued to be one by building off of the short attention spans of teenagers by setting them up as their target audience. It gives them short videos with a bunch of different kinds of content while also promoting the app on multiple different sites to keep people on and watching.
