Northern Women's Soccer Team Prepares for 2020 Season

Last year, the Northern women’s soccer team experienced a season full of both highs and lows. With the 2020 team roster complete, this year’s team has begun to get ready for the upcoming season, with high expectations due to the additional talent they have gained this year.

The lady knights had a record of 13-7-1 last year and finished the season as Bull City Cup finalists, after losing to Riverside in the championship.

Now that tryouts are over, the soccer team is excitedly waiting for their season to start. With the addition of many new players this year, there is a lot to look forward to, such as a new starting lineup and new positions.

“[I am mostly looking forward to] working as a team, [improving our] communication, and hopefully many victories,” senior Nancy Ramos said.

Last year, the soccer team had seven seniors graduate, a few of which were starters. Though adjusting to these changes could be challenging, this year’s team has shown early signs of great potential.

“I think this could be one of my best teams. I definitely think we will have the best team chemistry that we have had on any team,” coach Josh MacIver said. “It will also be the first team where a freshman is not starting so I believe that will help to have experience on the field.”

Last year’s team faced some disappointing losses during conference play and did not make it as far in playoffs as they had hoped. The team this year is striving to reach their goals and redeem themselves from last year.

“This season, I think the team can agree that we want to make it farther than the first round in playoffs,” sophomore Maeve Cassalia said. “[We also] want to beat our rivals, Riverside and East Chapel Hill.”

The knights have high expectations for this season, so they will have to work hard together in order to achieve their goals.

“Last year’s team sometimes struggled with playing as a team, so this year we definitely need to work on team bonding and being positive to one another,” junior Lilly Baker said.

Every team experiences challenges during a season. This year’s soccer team will have to focus on learning how to play with each other.

“I think our biggest challenge will be developing a style of play that works for us,” senior Makayla Powell said. “We lost a lot of players and gained a lot of new ones, so our tactics will need to change.”

Overall the women’s soccer team is eager for their season to start. The team’s first conference game is vs. East Chapel Hill on March 16, so the team has already started preparing for possibly their hardest season yet.
