Near the end of 2019, director Todd Phillips released his hit movie Joker. This highly anticipated film did not disappoint.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the movie grossed over one billion dollars in ticket sales within the first month. Doing this made Joker the first rated R movie in history to gross over one billion dollars.

The Joker has appeared in many movies, such as the Batman trilogy, but this was the first film where he is the main character.

In the film, Arthur Fleck, played by Joaquin Phoenix, is struggling with the world. He feels disconnected and his only will to live is the tiny bit of hope he has that someday he will not feel alone and isolated from the outside world. While being a party clown, Arthur struggles to keep on a positive kid friendly face with everything that has occurred over his lifetime. Outside of work, Arthur takes care of his mother that is sick and needs assistance at all times.

When Arthur finds the time, usually in the middle of the night, he will put on a full face of clown makeup and go destroy things around the city in hope to gain feeling of what the world really feels like.

The film provides an extremely accurate representation of how many Americans feel on a daily basis. Many teens today face these battles everyday, feeling alone and disconnected from the world they live in. Through showing the ups and downs of Arthur’s days, the director is able to relay extreme emotion onto the audience.

The popular villain, Joker, is the perfect character to tell this story through. In prior films, the Joker has shown that he has not had the easiest of lives. From birth he had struggled to find his place in the world. This ultimately led him to becoming evil and Batman’s most popular enemy.

The only bad thing about the film would be its length. Some scenes became very long and drawn out, almost like the director was trying to make more out of something that could have contributed to earlier and later scenes.

In conclusion, Todd Phillips does an outstanding job in putting together such a relevant and emotional film.
